20171019_083613_resizedMrs. Phillips’ 2nd grade Physical Education students are currently in their 20171019_083539_resizedLocomotor Skills unit. Locomotor skills are all the different ways we move our bodies, such as walking, running, jumping, galloping, skipping, and so on. These are essential skills for daily living and are benchmarks on the Ohio Physical Education Assessment that are expected of all 2nd graders.

During this unit, students have participated in locomotor skills review, including games and relays that promote skill improvement. Mrs. Phillips expressed that students love the many games played that involve locomotor movement. Mrs. Phillips concluded by adding, “As a whole, the 2nd graders at Northwood are excellent listeners and direction followers!”

Identifying Minerals, BPA Career Day, and District Reminders!

6th Graders Identify Minerals

IMG_20171013_113643654 (1)

Mrs. Welker’s 6th grade Science students are studying how to identify minerals and all of their properties. Mrs. Welker explained, “This lesson was a good way for students to understand the importance of how to collect and organize information.” She added that students also reviewed the scientific method and practiced using different senses when exploring an unknown.

IMG_20171013_093116440The 6th grade students really enjoyed the hands-on activities in this unit. One activity which helped with following directions had to do with writing out directions to build something with legos. The students then traded instructions and had to build from the directions given. This exercise helped students to understand how difficult it can be to create directions from scratch.

One of the most exciting activities in this unit involved students participating  in a lab of identifying minerals! The lab consisted of students evaluating minerals, looking at their color, streak, magnetic properties, and hardness. Then, students charted the information, trying to determine which minerals they had been working with during the lab. At the end of the lab, students looked at the list of minerals proposed. This information was then broken down by class and then grade, before revealing what the minerals were. Students were excited to see if their investigation came up with the correct answer!

BPA Officers Participate in BPA Career Day at Cedar Point!

Our NHS Business Professionals of America officers recently participated in the BPA Career Day at Cedar Point!

cedar 3 (2)Mrs. Myers explained that the focus of BPA is to provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn how the business world works. Students attend competitions with other schools that allow for the students to showcase their business skills in a more realistic environment. Allowing opportunities for students to get business experience, will help them tremendously when they make that next step into the professional world. Business students at Northwood are learning about Career Exploration in various business careers and discovering how careers in areas such as medicine, engineering, trades, and education have a strong business connection.  Mrs. Myers explained that encouraging freshmen and sophomores to participate on the BPA leadership team this year has been critical to Northwood BPA president, Tim Zielinski. She explained, “It’s important to him that the foundation this new student group is establishing, will be easily transitioned upon the graduation of the senior leaders.”

For the BPA Career Day, executives from Cedar Point (marketing, human resources, culinary, engineering, hospitality) developed a leadership/career day for students interested in enhancing leadership skills, discovering the possibilities of in demand career paths, and connecting real-world experiences into the classroom. Students participated in an educational presentation and behind-the-scenes view to learn interesting points regarding the process for how a new roller coaster is made, how concessions are handled and marketed (how theme parks get people to buy more food), and the marketing strategies involved in promoting the park, which can be a five year process.cedar 4 (1)

The students who participated on this trip enjoyed the chance to see how Cedar Point is run from a business perspective. Mrs. Myers added, “Cedar Point provided an excellent educational opportunity for students to learn about key positions within the Cedar Point organization and to witness it’s not all fun and games. Students were provided networking opportunities and have created possibilities for future internships!”

Northwood students will be participating in the BPA Fall Leadership Conference this year. Please watch for other activities sponsored by Northwood BPA this school year!

NHS Drama and Choral Departments To Host Murder-Mystery Dinner Theater!

Murder-Mystery

Northwood HS Drama and Choral Departments will be hosting a Murder-Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday, November 4th at 6pm in the school’s cafeteria. What is a Murder-Mystery Dinner Theater? Think of a giant game of CLUE, but the audience is directly involved in the problem solving to find out who the murderer really is.  The main characters of the theater will be professional actors from The Magical Mystery Theater Company from Michigan.

The story is “A Dance with Death” (a 1950’s Sock Hop that’s gone sour) rated PG-13. This 1950’s prom is a doo wop disaster! When a death on the dance floor makes this prom night a party foul, it is up to you to figure out “whodunit” and get this dance back on track. Trade clues with your guests, gather information about the crime, and reveal the one that made the dance go sour. This night of laughter and dancing is now too heavy to razz anyone’s berries, so it’s up to you to find the murderer!

Word from the bird is this is one show you will not want to miss. This night is shootin’ to be swell despite the disaster. Ladies and Gents feel free to dress in costume for the Sock Hop, or come as you are! Get ready to put on your thinking caps; you’ll need your wits about you to solve this crime!

This event is sure to be a night of fun, laughter, and great food. The food will be catered by Emily Bires of Northwood. Tickets are available by contacting Annette Slater at aslater@northwoodschools.org or by calling 419-691-3888 ext.2159. Advanced tickets are only $20 including dinner. Tickets at the door will be $25. Profits from the dinner theater will go towards the choir’s trip to Chicago and the Drama department’s spring production!

Physics Students Study Constant Velocity with Buggies

IMG_1485

Mr. Kohring’s Physics students have been focused on objects moving with a constant velocity. Students were asked to represent the motion of an object moving at a constant velocity in the following ways: via a written description, a position vs. time graph, a velocity vs. time graph, a motion map, and a mathematical model (or equation). With these representations, students were able to make predictions and solve complex problems.

Mr. Kohring stated that students enjoyed working with the buggies  to collect data and report information on their motion. As a wrap-up to the unit, students were asked to collect information on the motion of a fast moving buggy along with a slower moving tank. With this information, students were asked to predict an exact position in which the two vehicles would collide when starting from given positions. Different prediction methods were used to accomplish this. Mr. Kohring concluded, “The students did great with this as all had predictions close to where they actually met!”

2nd Graders Investigate Service Dogs

IMG_2589

Mrs. Reiter’s second grade language arts students are working on their research skills  Mrs. Reiter explained that students are focusing on the author’s purpose for writing a story, finding evidence to support, and analyzing and evaluating details to decide which are important to the story. The students will then take their facts and turn it into a piece of writing with a topic sentence, details, and a closing sentence!

IMG_2588Students have been researching and collecting facts on different breeds of dogs as well as how dogs are used for individuals who have an illness or disability. Mrs. Reiter explained, “We have read nonfiction stories about dogs that were heroes and we have read about different types of service therapy dogs provide people.” When asked what students have enjoyed most about this unit, Mrs. Reiter stated that students have really enjoyed looking at the different ways that therapy dogs are used to help people through their nonfiction books and informative videos!

“Speed Dating,” Studying Communities, Homecoming 2017 & More!

“Speed Dating” in Mr. Myers’ Class

IMG_0116

IMG_0110Mr. Myers’ 8th grade language arts students are currently diving into short stories! IMG_0117During this unit, students focus on analyzing short stories by looking at literary elements such as plot and conflict. Mr. Myers explained that thus far, students have enjoyed reading their stories in the new common area, reviewing terms using Quizlet Live, and of course “Speed Dating!”

IMG_0118The “Speed Dating” activity required students to create fake dating profiles using examples of indirect characterization. Their “dates” had to guess which traits they were trying to represent! This was a wonderfully engaging activity that helped students with understanding what can sometimes be a very difficult language arts concept. The next stop for Mr. Myers’ students is a focus on theme!

3rd Grade Students Study Communities

Suburban community

Mrs. Bates’ 3rd grade social studies students are currently studying communities. The focus of the unit is to discover the types of communities there are and to learn the three branches of our local government, including the jobs of these branches. Students discovered the characteristics of the three types of communities (urban, suburban, and rural). During their research they wrote about each type and created pictures for each of them.

Mrs. Bates explained that students enjoyed creating posters for the communities, and are looking forward to a class field trip to the municipal building where they will talk with former city councilwoman, Connie Hughes (who also serves as one of our library aides), and current city councilwoman, Kelley Wills, who is our very own government teacher! Students are hoping that they will also be able to meet, Mr. Schimmel, our mayor of Northwood!

Homecoming 2017

Congratulations to our 2017 Homecoming King and Queen, Gabe LaPlante and Allison Vogl! Thank you to our NHS Student Council for planning a great first Homecoming Dance in the new building!
