2nd Graders Practice Locomotor Skills
Mrs. Phillips’ 2nd grade Physical Education students are currently in their 
Locomotor Skills unit. Locomotor skills are all the different ways we move our bodies, such as walking, running, jumping, galloping, skipping, and so on. These are essential skills for daily living and are benchmarks on the Ohio Physical Education Assessment that are expected of all 2nd graders.
During this unit, students have participated in locomotor skills review, including games and relays that promote skill improvement. Mrs. Phillips expressed that students love the many games played that involve locomotor movement. Mrs. Phillips concluded by adding, “As a whole, the 2nd graders at Northwood are excellent listeners and direction followers!”
8th Grade P.E. Students Focus on Basketball
Mrs. Wheeler’s 8th grade Physical Education students are currently participating in their basketball unit. Students have been practicing their dribbling, passing, and shooting skills, as well as passing the ball with defenders and keeping possession of the ball. Mrs. Wheeler added that during this unit, students have enjoyed playing small 3-on-3 games against their classmates.

The 6th grade students really enjoyed the hands-on activities in this unit. One activity which helped with following directions had to do with writing out directions to build something with legos. The students then traded instructions and had to build from the directions given. This exercise helped students to understand how difficult it can be to create directions from scratch. 
Mrs. Myers explained that the focus of BPA is to provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn how the business world works. Students attend competitions with other schools that allow for the students to showcase their business skills in a more realistic environment. Allowing opportunities for students to get business experience, will help them tremendously when they make that next step into the professional world. Business students at Northwood are learning about Career Exploration in various business careers and discovering how careers in areas such as medicine, engineering, trades, and education have a strong business connection. Mrs. Myers explained that encouraging freshmen and sophomores to participate on the BPA leadership team this year has been critical to Northwood BPA president, Tim Zielinski. She explained, “It’s important to him that the foundation this new student group is establishing, will be easily transitioned upon the graduation of the senior leaders.”
Students have been researching and collecting facts on different breeds of dogs as well as how dogs are used for individuals who have an illness or disability. Mrs. Reiter explained, “We have read nonfiction stories about dogs that were heroes and we have read about different types of service therapy dogs provide people.” When asked what students have enjoyed most about this unit, Mrs. Reiter stated that students have really enjoyed looking at the different ways that therapy dogs are used to help people through their nonfiction books and informative videos!
Mr. Myers’ 8th grade language arts students are currently diving into short stories! 
During this unit, students focus on analyzing short stories by looking at literary elements such as plot and conflict. Mr. Myers explained that thus far, students have enjoyed reading their stories in the new common area, reviewing terms using Quizlet Live, and of course “Speed Dating!” 
The “Speed Dating” activity required students to create fake dating profiles using examples of indirect characterization. Their “dates” had to guess which traits they were trying to represent! This was a wonderfully engaging activity that helped students with understanding what can sometimes be a very difficult language arts concept. The next stop for Mr. Myers’ students is a focus on theme!
