Project Based Inquiry Science with Mrs. Fish

Mrs. Fish’s 7th graders are currently working on a STEM unit with a focus on engineering and the science of potential and kinetic energy, mechanical energy, and energy transformations. This is a Project Based Inquiry Science unit in which students are asked to consider, “How can I use my understanding of energy to simplify or enhance the world around me?” In addition, during this unit, students are challenged to complete one of three different tasks at the end of the unit to answer the big question. The first option is for students to create a Rube Goldberg contraption. For this option, a student or group of students creates a Rube Goldberg that is videotaped or presented at a Rube Goldberg competition. The second options allows for students to invent something to simplify or enhance one’s life. For this option, a student or group of students invents something that uses this unit’s energy concepts to make something they do in school more simple. These inventions can be presented to the community or school via YouTube video, or students can enter their invention into a competition in order to share it with the world. The final option is for students to create a minecart and rail energy system within Minecraft. A student or group of students use a “sandbox” game (like Minecraft – carts and rails, etc.) to design a roller coaster, Rube Goldberg, or a system that will solve a task. Students then screen-cast their design and share it as a video on YouTube or with the school. Mrs. Fish also reminds that while these three tasks are options, if a student comes up with a project that the teacher thinks will meet the intent of this unit, they can, in fact, create their own project challenge.

During this unit, the 7th graders engage in benchmark lessons that involve a variety of hands-on labs, virtual labs, and activities aimed at scaffolding their understanding of energy. Project days are provided for students to not only work on their own project, but also to see what others are doing. These days often include conferencing with Mrs. Fish and gallery walks so that students can share progress and gain feedback from their peers. Finally, during this unit, students are expected to blog about their understanding of energy as they progress through the unit. Using a blog as a journal allows students to add photos, drawings, and possibly video, as well as allowing them to share their ideas with an audience larger than their classroom, which gives meaning to the project they are developing. Students thoroughly enjoy creating their final projects and sharing them with others!

First Grade Students Study Life Cycles

Mrs. Duckett’s first grade students have been looking at life cycles, food chains, plants, the environment, and how interdependent they all are with one another. Mrs. Duckett explained, “We are looking at changes over time, such as seasons, things we use, things that grow, and US!” In fact, one of the most exciting activities during this lesson was one in which students brought in baby pictures to display for the class. Students participated in an activity in which they guessed who they thought was in each picture. The reveal of names was fun because, while some were easy to guess, others were a bit more challenging. “We all enjoyed seeing the adorable baby pictures,” said Mrs. Duckett. Soon, students will be cutting strips of paper the same length of when they were born and another strip of their current height. Mrs. Duckett concluded, “It’s so fun to see how good we are growing and all we can accomplish now!”

Tuition, based on a sliding-fee scale, is charged for children without special needs. Children attend preschool two full days per week (either Tues/Thurs or Wed/Fri).

Wednesday, May 9th, our NES K-6 grade Rangers will participate in the national “Walk and Bike to School Day!” Students are encouraged to “strap on your helmets, raise your kickstands, and join the thousands of students, families, community partners, and elected officials all around the country who will be participating in this year’s event!” According to walkbiketoschool.org,  “Participants kicked off last year’s ride in record breaking numbers! Thousands of students pedaled their way to school during the 2017 Bike to School Day celebration! Over 3,000 schools across the country, from D.C. to Hawaii participated.”

Learning about Penguins and Preparing for Spring Testing

Second Graders Learn about Penguins

Penguins are the hot topic for second graders in Ms. Nice’s classroom.  
“We learned a lot about how mother and father penguins work together caring for a brand new penguin egg in Penguin Chick by Betty Tatham,” said Ms. Nice.  She explained that the book is a narrative nonfiction book, which is a true story about a topic.  20180328_131737_resized (1)

Did you know that female emperor penguins lay their egg and then the father penguins keep it snuggly warm and safe from the cold in their brood patch over their feet for two whole months?  After that, mom comes back with lots of food and takes over caring for the young penguin while the father goes to get more food. What teamwork!!!
20180327_132719_resized (1)Ms. Nice continued, “We have practiced teamwork too, working together to research 14 different kinds of penguins on our iPads and in books so that we could write research reports about their characteristics and habitats.  When our research was completed, we wrote books using the facts that we learned about our penguins.” Students had a lot of fun working together, reading books for one another, and finding out lots of new information about these birds!  The second graders also loved watching videos of penguins living on the land and swimming underwater in their natural habitats! “Penguins are a big hit in our classroom,” concluded Ms. Nice.

 

5th Graders Prepare for AIR Testing

Mrs. McKanna’s fifth grade ELA students are currently focusing on preparing for the Spring AIR tests. Students are spending time reviewing the skills that they have been working on all year. Mrs. McKanna explained that students have collected notes in their interactive notebooks throughout the year. Now, they are going through the table of contents and reviewing the skills listed. Additionally, students are working on an opinion essay using the OREO format in order to remember all of the aspects required to write an effective opinion essay. The “O” stands for opinion, the “R” for reason, the “E” for explanation, and the final “O” is for restating the opinion. Students have even gotten creative enough to pack two additional “R’s” and “E’s” to make a triple-stuffed OREO! Of course, students have also indulged in a few delicious OREO cookies along the way!

Additionally, students are doing other review activities such as using pairs to work their way around the room where short stories are placed on the wall. Students work together to determine main idea and theme. They work in small groups to read other cards in which they have to create a summary. Students also play “I Have Who Has” as a class. Additionally, students have found various apps whose format for questioning closely matches that of the AIR tests. Students read short stories, read paired texts, and sometimes listen to embedded videos before answering questions. Students have been able to share short answer responses from their iPads to the Clevertouch so that they can learn from one another about what makes a great response. Students have enjoyed their opportunity to “be the teacher” as they share their work on the Clevertouch board.

Mrs. McKanna added that as the testing days draw near, it is important for each student to remember to get a lot of rest each night, eat a great breakfast, and come to school prepared to focus. Each student will need headphones for the testing weeks, and they will need to have their iPads fully charged every day! Mrs. McKanna concluded, “We have worked so hard all year and soon we will be able to show what we know!”

“Between the Wars” and Analyzing Bacteria

“Between the Wars” in Modern World History

Mr. Donegan’s Modern World History students recently completed a project titled image3“Between the Wars.” This project focused on the Great Depression. It is an important focus for students because as Mr. Donegan explains, “through studying the time between the wars, students will understand why twenty years after World War I, another, more deadly, war began.”

image2For the “Between the Wars” class project, students had the option to create board games, parody songs, videos, posters, blog/journal entries, and websites about the causes of the Great Depression, life during the Great Depression, and the effects of the Great Depression. Students enjoyed the ability to use their creativity to display their knowledge about the subject. One group made a board game with rules similar to the game of “Life,” however, it typically had a much more bleak ending. Another group made a “Headbands”-style game that provided words or phrases about the Great Depression. The other members of the group had to offer clues to help them solve the problem. Finally, another group made a poster illustrating the causes of the Great Depression!

Analyzing Bacteria in Mrs. Geerken’s Class

Mrs. Geerken’s sixth grade gifted students have been putting their focus on a Bacteria mini-unit. During this unit, students used the Scientific Method to find the places and things that harbored the most bacteria and the least bacteria in our school. In order to do 2Observing Growththis, the students collected samples from places and things around the school. Mrs. Geerken explained, “We each inoculated our own nutrient agar petri dishes and labeled the dishes with the areas we collected our samples from. Over the next couple of days, we observed and documented the growth of bacteria (and fungi). We then analyzed our results and compared them to each of our hypotheses and learned that the samples we thought would grow the most bacteria sometimes did not grow the most. We each created our own graphs of the data we collected using the Numbers app. In the end, we came together and compared our results and discussed the reasons why we got the results that we did.”

Students really enjoyed watching the bacteria grow, taking pictures of the petri dishes, and taking pictures through the eyepiece of the specimen stereoscopes to get a picture of a colony up close!

Kindergarten Students Learn Sounds

Mrs. Canaday’s kindergarten students are beginning a unit on sounds. Sounds are the first part of learning how to read and write words! Mrs. Canaday explained that all of kindergarten is divided into six groups to work on a specific skill. Mrs. Canaday’s group is focusing on what letter a word starts with. Additionally, each group has a high school mentor who comes to help! IMG_8603

Kindergarten students have enjoyed hands on games and activities that are at their level. They especially enjoy their high school helper, Brendon, who comes to play games and help them learn. Brendon even joins them for recess sometimes! Mrs. Canaday added, “We love having high school students come to be mentors for the younger kids and help them get excited about learning!”

 

First Graders use MATH

Mrs. Anderson’s first graders are currently learning about additional strategies. Students will learn different strategies to help them add to 20! Mrs. Anderson explained that, “Instead of whole group math instruction, we do something called MATH. M is for meet the teacher: students meet with the teacher for the lesson. A is for at your seat, students complete their math workbook independently. T is for technology time, students work on a math app. H is for hands on, students work with a partner or alone to complete various math games and activities.” Mrs. Anderson continued, “This type of instruction lets me meet the needs of all of my learners. I am able to differentiate their work. Some may be completing first grade work, some may need additional support through repeated teachings, or some may need to be challenged. Our high school mentors really help our students complete their math as well! The students enjoy seeing the mentors!”

IMG_0524During this unit, students have enjoyed doing their math using the MATH rotation system because it fast-paced and everyone is doing something different! Additionally, Mrs. Anderson concluded, “My students enjoy using the pod common area to complete their work as well. We use it to record ourselves reading and more!”

 

7th Graders Conquer Algebra Expressions & Equations

Mrs. Semler’s 7th grade math students are currently focusing on Algebra expressions andIMG_1165 equations, including multi-step equations and using the distributive property. This unit involves lots of partner activities. Mrs. Semler encourages peer teaching if students are not understanding. She added, “Many students started out with little understanding about algebra and have done an AWESOME job with it! Understanding is through the roof!”

IMG_1168One activity that students participated in was performing a “partner swap” activity. This involved having to solve five different equations, each with a different partner in the room. “I love seeing the kids teach each other and maybe talk to someone they wouldn’t talk to on a typical day,” said Mrs. Semler. She concluded, “Grades on this unit have been higher than I have ever had before! The kids are really invested in conquering this unit! I’m a SUPER PROUD teacher!

Clothespin Dolls & NaNoWriMo

Clothespin Dolls in Mrs. Hammel’s Class

Mrs. Hammel’s third grade language arts students just read the book Molly’s Pilgrim. In Carl Ashton Native Americanthe book, the children were instructed to make a Pilgrim or Native American doll by using a clothespin. Mrs. Hammel assigned her students the exact assignment, and the product can be seen on display in Pod C! Mrs. Hammel stated, “We are in awe at the creativity that many children used when constructing the dolls!”

Emma PendreyMrs. Hammel went on to explain further that Molly’s Pilgrim not only discussed the traditional Thanksgiving, but it also introduced students to modern day Pilgrims. In the story, Molly and her family were from Russia, so Molly’s clothespin doll was dressed like a young Russian girl. Students learned that it takes all kinds of Pilgrims to make a Thanksgiving!

When asked what students enjoyed most about this unit, Mrs. Hammel said that the students enjoyed receiving a bag with a clothespin, a few pieces of cloth, and two pieces of yarn. Students were allowed and encouraged to use any supplies from home to construct the Pilgrim or Native American doll. Mrs. Hammel concluded, “Each doll is unique in its own special way, just like the clothespin dolls in the book we read.”

NaNoWriMo Takes Over Creative Writing 11-12

Have you ever tried to do something new for 30 consecutive days? It’s not an easy task, but it is exactly the challenge that the juniors and seniors in Mrs. Toflinski’s Creative Writing class have taken on in the month of November. November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and people all over the world take on the challenge of writing a complete novel, start to finish, in the 30 days of November. Mrs. Toflinski explained that the adult goal is set at 50,000 words while the young writer’s goal is more flexible. For this year, the students have individual goals of completing 35,000 words each during November. That’s a total of 805,000 words for the entire class!

IMG_6073Students spent the entire month of October planning their novels for NaNoWriMo. Students completed various graphic organizers and writing activities to get them thinking about their protagonist, setting, and major conflicts. They even had a guest speaker, 2017 alumni of the year and published author, Sean DeLauder, who spoke to them about the rules of writing and how to successfully break them!

“Because NaNoWriMo is a month long project, all of our assignments IMG_6068are associated with NaNoWriMo. Students use the Schoology discussion board to update word counts and to answer exit slips. Writing assignments involve turning in about 500 to 1,000 words at a time,” said Mrs. Toflinski. She added that students have also been using FlipGrid to record video reflections regarding their NaNoWriMo progress. “It’s fun for the students because the videos only have to be about a minute in length and students can use SnapChat filters while recording the videos. Once the videos are uploaded to the grid, they can see everyone else’s video reflections.” Students were also able to use the Canva app to create their own book covers and back of the book “blurbs.”

IMG-0059Students have gone through an array of emotions through the first half of the month. “Some students started out very excited and some were very unsure of the entire project, but everyone has been writing!” Mrs. Toflinski added that she is very proud of the progress that students have made in the first half of the month. “It’s great to see their excitement when they reach a mini goal!” Mrs. Toflinski encourages everyone to check out the F Pod where the NaNoWriMo progress chart is located and to continue cheering on the Creative Writing students. A little encouragement goes a long way when taking on such a unique challenge!

Booms, Bonanzas, and Pep Rally & Field Trip Highlights!

Mr. Dickey’s sophomore students just completed an activity covering the Mining, bb3Farming, Oil, Ranching Bonanzas and the Railroad Boom. Students were divided  into two separate groups, which were created based upon their expertise thus far in their studies. Both groups were tasked with creating a matrix of information that all students could use to determine the causes and the impacts of each Boom or Bonanza. The students in Group A, after reading more about each Boom and Bonanza, used their matrix to create an acrostic  poem that highlighted all the positive aspect of the Booms and Bonanzas. Then, the small group took it one step further and created an acrostic poem that rhymed. Sophomore, Anthony Williams, even put his version to a catchy beat! The students in Group B took their matrix information and created billboards and commercials to draw attention to the West, giving the public information or to just entertain the public. These students created personalized scripts tailored for their billboard and recorded them. Justyce Luna’s farmer character was a big hit in the 8th period class!

 

6th Graders Study Theme

Ms. Murphy’s 6th grade Language Arts students are currently studying theme and main idea. Ms. Murphy explained that this is important for students “because it helps them IMG-0844read with purpose and take away meaning from any text.” She continued that the lessons learned by identifying themes in a text can be applied to real life, as themes should be universal.

IMG-0851Students just finished a fun mini-project on theme. They worked in groups to analyze a Disney song and find a theme that was appropriate for the song. They also had to find evidence using the song lyrics to support their theme. Finally, students created a poster to illustrate their theme and evidence.

Ms. Murphy stated that students have really enjoyed reading different kinds of texts to determine theme, and they especially enjoyed the mini-project, as it incorporated many different kinds of learning styles!

 

Holocaust Memorial Center

Our 8th grade Rangers recently visited the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. This field trip is the culmination of an in-depth study of the Holocaust and the memoir Night.

“Speed Dating,” Studying Communities, Homecoming 2017 & More!

IMG_0110Mr. Myers’ 8th grade language arts students are currently diving into short stories! IMG_0117During this unit, students focus on analyzing short stories by looking at literary elements such as plot and conflict. Mr. Myers explained that thus far, students have enjoyed reading their stories in the new common area, reviewing terms using Quizlet Live, and of course “Speed Dating!”

IMG_0118The “Speed Dating” activity required students to create fake dating profiles using examples of indirect characterization. Their “dates” had to guess which traits they were trying to represent! This was a wonderfully engaging activity that helped students with understanding what can sometimes be a very difficult language arts concept. The next stop for Mr. Myers’ students is a focus on theme!

 

3rd Grade Students Study Communities

Suburban community

Mrs. Bates’ 3rd grade social studies students are currently studying communities. The focus of the unit is to discover the types of communities there are and to learn the three branches of our local government, including the jobs of these branches. Students discovered the characteristics of the three types of communities (urban, suburban, and rural). During their research they wrote about each type and created pictures for each of them.

Mrs. Bates explained that students enjoyed creating posters for the communities, and are looking forward to a class field trip to the municipal building where they will talk with former city councilwoman, Connie Hughes (who also serves as one of our library aides), and current city councilwoman, Kelley Wills, who is our very own government teacher! Students are hoping that they will also be able to meet, Mr. Schimmel, our mayor of Northwood!

Welcome Annika, Mrs. Reiter’s Reading, and the Buggy Lab!

Annika’s American Adventure

FullSizeRender (19)We are honored to have Annika Mueller as our foreign exchange student this school year. Annika is from Braunschweig (or “Brunsvig” in English), Germany. Annika will be spending her school year at Northwood High School, where she will attend classes as an 11th grade student. When asked how she became interested in the foreign exchange student program, Annika explained that she has always been interested in different countries. She loves to travel, to get to know new people, and to understand new cultures. Additionally, she would like to improve her English speaking skills.

Annika explained that in order to become an exchange student, she had to look for a foreign exchange student organization. The application process was quite lengthy and included almost 100 pages of paperwork and a 30 minute interview in which she had to speak completely in English. Annika and her parents had to sign several contracts and Annika attended a weekend trip to prepare for her school year in the United States. Near the end of the application process, Annika had to apply for her Visa and go to Berlin, to the consulate. On August 3rd, her American adventure began!

When asked about the biggest differences that she has seen between her school back home and Northwood High School, she explained that classes are generally much longer and that there are no electives such as Creative Writing or Film. She added that at her home school, they do not have iPads and still use books. Finally, she stated that her school in Germany does not have athletics after school. In fact, in order to play a sport, one must join a club outside of school. This means no Friday night football games, or cheers being led by cheerleaders.

Clearly, there are several things that Annika would like to do during her time in the United States. She would like to see Chicago and Columbus. She would like to visit New York again, though she has been to NYC two times. Unfortunately, she won’t be indulging in any American burgers, as she is a vegetarian. Annika added that she has been talking with her host family about taking a few road trips during this year. But, she concluded that just going to an American supermarket is pretty exciting!

Second Graders Learn Sequencing and Descriptive Writing

IMG_1594Mrs. Reiter’s 2nd grade reading and writing students have been working on comprehending and sequencing literature. Students read Henry and Mudge and worked in cooperative learning groups to sequence events in the story. Students have also been working on writing descriptive paragraphs about the main character, Mudge. Mrs. Reiter’s students used the iPad app Popplet to create a graphic organizer. Then, they shared their graphic organizer with the class using the Apple TV and Smartboard. After sharing, the students used details from the story as well as their graphic organizer to write a descriptive paragraph. Mrs. Reiter explained that focusing on sequencing and using details from the story allows students to understanding how events, told in order, can help aid them in comprehension. She added that students “have enjoyed using technology to create graphic organizers. Our culminating activity was creating Mudge and retelling the story.” Mrs. Reiter encourages everyone to stop by the second grade hallway to see students’ creations!

 

Physics Students Complete Buggy Lab

IMG_0006Mr. Kohring’s Physics students are currently working on their Constant Velocity unit and have been working on the “Buggy Lab.” During this lab, students collect data with the goal of representing the buggy’s motion mathematically and graphically. Mr. Kohring explained that later in the unit, students will be asked tIMG_0007 (2)o represent the motion of different objects in various ways, such as motion maps, position-time graphs, and velocity-time graphs. When asked what students have enjoyed most about this unit, Mr. Kohring explained that students have really enjoyed the hands-on learning and application. They have also enjoyed the opportunity to work with their classmates!

Superintendent’s Message

As we finish our third week of school and are about to enjoy the long Labor Day weekend with friends and family, it is my hope that everyone has successfully settled into this new school year. A new school year is ripe with promise and I very much enjoy the annual return to school with all of the catching up on everyone’s summer, the smiling faces of our students who all have grown so much, and the plethora of fresh sneakers in the hall.

A new school year also introduces new schedules and new routines and cartloads of new information which often create some stress in all of our lives as well. I hope your experience this year was manageable even as we ask so much of all of you to get off to a good start. It is our goal to have everything work and when the inevitable glitches do come along, have good folks willing and able to help you navigate the waters. If you have questions or comments on any of it, let us know!

Effective two way communication makes life work better for all of us and here at school, we continue to work to improve our methods to both provide and receive information. One of the major perks of living in a small community with a small school is the ability to simply call and have that call returned in a timely manner. We can be reached at 419-691-3888 and we still have a physical address to which the United States Postal Service delivers mail.

In addition to those more traditional methods of communication, as a school, we have email, we have Schoology, and we have our school website. We also endeavor to provide information through social media. The school has a Facebook account, a Twitter account, The Ranger Roundup blog, as well as a district Instagram and a second Instagram dedicated to our construction project. Many of our staff also have individual accounts on social media that you may to choose to follow as well.

For some of us (and by that I mean at least me), there is too much stuff to try to keep a handle on. We are working on that too.  This year, along with our new website, which works well with computer browsers, we have a brand new smartphone app that I encourage everyone to download from your app store. It is our hope to make this the “go to” place for what you need to know from our school. As I see the content increasing everyday, I believe you will find this to be the case. I will include more detailed information on our communication channels at the end of the message.

I also want to share with you all, that the new school is on schedule to open for the start of the 2017-2018 school year. We are planning for the first day of school for students to be shortly after Labor Day. So, if your family has always wanted to take some time away from home in August, next summer is a good time to plan for that!

As the new school progresses, I get increasingly excited about the possibilities it has for the education of our children and I can’t wait to show it to you all in about a year from now.
