The PayForIt.net company is completing some server updates that have delayed the loading of school fees into their system. We apologize for this unforeseen issue as parents attempt to pay school fees. We will post again as soon as this issue is resolved and fees are uploaded and ready for payments to be accepted. Fees DO NOT have to paid prior to picking up student schedules/iPads. You can continue to check the site periodically as well, as we do hope this process will be completed quickly.
6th Grade Carnival Recap
Sixth grade teacher, Mr. Joshua Roach, is happy to announce that after an extremely successful event, the return of the NES School Carnival netted about $3,000. The sixth graders are using this money to take a trip to Cedar Point, which ties directly into the sixth grade science standards.
Since the carnival, students designed roller coasters online via the Jason Project Digital lab Coaster Creater. You can check out the website here: http://content3.jason.org/resource_content/content/digitallab/4859/misc_content/public/coaster.html. Students started to create their roller coasters in class. Mr. Roach explained that students had to design a roller coaster using foam piping, a strict budget, and abide by some important roller coaster requirements! The coaster had to include two of the following: a loop, a turn, or a corkscrew. The coaster needed the cart (marble) to stop at the end of the coaster, and not fall off at any time during the trip (safe travel). Students also needed to explain where the cart transferred from kinetic to potential energy. Students are attending Cedar Point today, May 19th, where they will enjoy the opportunity to ride the rides that they made models of in class!
NLS Received Clean Plate Award
Every year, the Wood County Health Department requires two inspections of our school kitchens. Our kitchen staff is required to practice food safety knowledge and sanitation throughout the operations. This can be difficult to do depending on the operation. Therefore, Mrs. Emilia Bires requires much training for her NLS staff. Mrs. Bires requires that all kitchen staff complete Serv Safe training, which is a Food Handler Program used to train and certify staff. Staff must have a complete knowledge of food safety which includes proper handwashing, preventing cross contamination, cleaning and sanitizing equipment utensils, proper cooking, holding, and heating of foods, and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point).
The Northwood Food Service Staff have had very outstanding inspections with zero violations. Mrs. Bires explained that per the State of Ohio, Each year, Wood County awards the “Clean Plate” Award for meeting the required credentials. We are proud to announce that our Food Service Staff has once again received the Clean Plate Award! Mrs. Bires stated, “Our Food Staff is awesome! I have nine employees and all have maintained dedication in the practice of food safety knowledge and sanitation throughout the operations. This is our third year we are receiving the Clean Plate Award!” She added, “We have been faced with many new challenges in the last six years with the New Federal guidelines for our National School Lunch Program. We have adapted the new changes and moved forward, and continue to do the best to serve our students and staff.” Congratulations to Mrs. Bires and the Northwood Local Schools Food Service Staff!
NLS Technology Update
Recently, the Ranger Roundup was able to sit down with NHS Technology Integrator Mr. Tim Laird to reflect on our technology integration at NLS and what we can look forward to in the upcoming years. When asked about the advances that we have made over the course of the 2015-2016 school year, Mr. Laird explained that some of the greatest strides have come with the use of great formative assessment tools such as Kahoot and Quizziz. He explained that teachers are using these tools not only to reinforce content but also to gather data which drives instruction when it comes to re-teaching and re-focusing attention on content students may have a difficult time grasping. Presentation and expression tools have also been popular this year. Book Creator, Glogster, and Edu Blogs have allowed students to present learned material in a creative and expressive way by combining text images, photos, and videos. He explained that many teachers now use a “blended classroom” approach which shifts the instruction portion of a class outside of the class period, thus, freeing up class time for in-depth discussion and analyzing of material.
Looking to the 2016-2017 school year, Mr. Laird stated that we will continue to shift our classrooms to being more student-centered and to increase student engagement. In regards to his position as the technology integrator, he stated, “Our focus will be helping instructors create lesson and activities which are identifiable, as authentic learning.” Such lessons are identifiable through an activity that involves real-world problems and that mimics the work of professionals, use of open-ended inquiry, students engaging in discourse and social learning in a community of learners, and students directing their own learning in project work. Looking even further, to our big move in 2017, Mr. Laird explained that the physical space of the building will greatly enhance the facilitation of more student centered classrooms. Teachers will have access to the traditional classroom as well as collaboration space that will allow more flexibility to design lessons that fit the “authentic learning” model. He added, “Students will no longer be bound by the limitations of a traditional classroom with rows of desks. The new building, quite simply, will provide options for teachers to set up the parameters of a lesson.”
When asked about the hurdles that we will face in regards to technology, Mr. Laird explained that we must continue to find new and innovative ways to harness the power of technology. He explained, “We must continue to train ourselves and have support systems in place for students so that they are not burdened by the technology, but freed to explore new and exciting ways to learn content in each class.” He added that students will need assistance when it comes to organizing material in a digital environment and assistance with learning how to be more in control of their individualized learning.
Mr. Laird stated that when it comes to technology integration, we want to focus on the skill sets and career readiness that the technology provides our students. He added that we are committed to creating an environment that will best prepare students to meet the challenges of an ever changing world. He concluded, “For better or worse, we now live in a rapidly changing world. The pace at which change now comes requires all of us to be innovative and to find ways to tap into the changes and to make ourselves relevant. We must all learn to take control of our learning and to find ways to leverage the vast amount of information that is at our fingertips. It’s a challenge for both teachers and students, but it also provides opportunities for finding new and innovative ways to contribute to our society!”
Mrs. McKanna’s fifth grade language arts students are enjoying the various iPad apps available to them this year. Some of their favorites for creating include Comic Strip, ChatterKid, and StoryKit. Students use IXL and Spelling City weekly for practice with grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Students also work on fluency by using their iPads to record themselves reading a passage that they have never seen before; this is called a “cold” read. After several days of practicing that same passage, they record it again as a “practiced” read. This allows students to hear how they have improved and see their improvement via the rubric on Schoology.
Recently, students finished reading novels with the theme of friendship. Each class read a different title, including Maniac Magee, The Pinballs, and Wonder. Reading these novels provided many different opportunities for great discussions about real life issues that students can relate to in their own lives. In addition, students focused on skill work including comprehension, story elements, main idea, summarizing, and writing. Mrs. McKanna’s students were able to incorporate CAFE (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expand vocabulary) strategies as they read both aloud and independently.
Student enjoyed working collaboratively to create story summaries. Two of the classes were able to showcase their group work by creating a newscast and recording with the GreenScreen app on their iPads. The third class used the StoryKit app to create and share their summaries. Both apps allowed students to work on enunciation, articulation, and fluency. In addition to working creatively on their iPads, student enjoyed reading orally as a whole group and hearing one another be expressive. They enjoyed discussing the stories and finding out if their predictions came true!
