Northwood Community Joins to Support All for Books

The businesses and community groups of Northwood have once again stepped up and demonstrated their concern for Northwood’s children. The Northwood libraries are sponsoring a Scholastic Book Fair on October 22-26 in the Lark Gym. Not only will the Book Fair supplement the libraries book collections, but it will motivate students to read more. Since more leisure reading translates into stronger reading skills and higher grades in English, math, science and history, students and the community benefit from increased reading.

Library aide Connie Hughes, who is helping to coordinate the Book Fair, believes in the community’s importance in educating a child, so she reached out to a number of local business and service groups. She asked them to contribute to the All for Books fund, money set aside to purchase books for our neediest students. “When we began planning for the Book Fair, we didn’t want any child to feel left out. We hoped that we could raise enough money to give books to some of the students who didn’t have the resources to buy for themselves. We never dreamed we’d be able to buy a book for every student.”

But that’s exactly what the Northwood community has enabled. Through the generous contributions of the following businesses, the Northwood libraries have raised over $3000 to buy books. Add to that the nearly $500 that students in kindergarten through sixth grade raised in a change drive (kudos to Mrs. Anderson’s first grade class for winning the pizza party for the largest donation!) and we can guarantee that every student enrolled in preschool through sixth grade will get a new book at our book distribution event in December.

Says Mrs. Hughes, “Education is not just about family anymore. It’s about the community opening its heart to our kids, and Northwood showed how big its heart is” with its contributions to All for Books. Thank you so very much, Northwood!
