Congratulations to the Class of 2018

NHS Class of 2018 Val and Sal

Each year, Northwood High School names the two seniors with the highest cumulative G.P.A. as the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the class. Both Jonah Shover and Philip Ottinger will speak at this Sunday’s graduation ceremony. Congratulations to these incredibly hardworking students!

Jonah Shover –  Valedictorian

Jonah ShoverJonah Shover will attend The University of Toledo this fall and will major in Mechanical Engineering. During his time at NHS Jonah has served as a member of the Marching, Concert, Jazz, and Pep Bands as well as serving as a member of the Key Club and Student Council. Additionally, Jonah was the recipient of the Victor Thapor Award during his junior year of high school.

When asked what he will miss most about his time at NHS he listed both his Chemistry and Physics Labs! He is most looking forward to his internships as he begins his college career. Jonah explained, “I hope to become an aerospace Engineer at NASA and work on rocket engines.” Jonah concluded, “I’d like to thank Mrs. Moses for helping me discover what I’m passionate about when I did my presentation on colonizing Mars and Mr. Kohring for helping me build on those passions in his classes.”

Philip Ottinger – Salutatorian

Philip OttingerPhilip Ottinger has kept busy during his time as a NHS Ranger. Philip is a member of the track and cross country teams, as well as Key Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, BPA, and government club. This fall, Philip will continue the next chapter of his academic journey at The University of Toledo, where he will major in Electrical Engineering.

Philip stated that he is honored to call himself a Northwood student and that he will miss the students and staff, “who’ve all been extraordinarily helpful and kind to me.” Philip expressed that as he begins college he is most looking forward to the knowledge and the certification to work toward solving the issues that he is most passionate about. In the future, Philip hopes for three things: to make an impact, avoid complacency, and to take part in his community.

In conclusion, Philip stated, “I cannot thank Northwood Enough for all the fantastic years, all the ‘average’ years, and even the few bad years. For all those who’ve made a difference in my life, hopefully I’ve made it abundantly clear how much that difference has meant to me. Thank you!”
