University of Findlay Professor Visits NHS Biology Students
Prior to Winter Break, Mr. Shumaker’s sophomore Biology students welcomed a guest speaker from the University of Findlay. Professor Christopher White joined the class to discuss marine biology research and to show students how biologists copy DNA in the lab when conducting scientific tests. The Nobel Prize winning technique, called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), is used in many applications from paternity testing, crime scene investigation, genetic blood tests, and cancer research.
Mr. Shumaker explained that this is the first of three visits from Professor White. The next visit will be at the end of March, when he will bring all the lab supplies to have Mr. Shumaker’s classes conduct a PCR reaction right within the classroom! A field trip is also in the works, to have a few NHS Biology students travel to the University of Findlay to conduct further experiments and to visit the campus!
Thus far, Mr. Shumaker’s Biology students have found the study of DNA and genetics quite interesting. They have enjoyed getting to learn about real-world techniques and look forward to getting to complete the experiments themselves. The Ranger Roundup will be sure to stay in touch with Mr. Shumaker’s Biology class for further updates once students complete the PCR experiment themselves!
