Right to Read Week, C.A.R.E. Awards, and Senior Reminders!

Rangers Enjoy “Right to Read” Week & Literacy Night

Recently our elementary Rangers participated in “Right to Read” week! Both Olney and NES students participated in a spirit week that involved Pajama Day, Favorite Team Day, Mismatch DayIMG_4285, School Colors Day, and Hat Day! Olney students participated in answering trivia questions each day, with a winner being picked from each class to receive a prize. Students also participated in silent reading each day with special reading places and special reading friends and animals. NES students participated in a door decorating contest in which they displayed their favorite book, author, or character.

One of the many highlights of the week was the visit from author Denise Brennan-Nelson IMG_4289who presented to various classes as well as at the Family Literacy Night. Brennan-Nelson is a multi-award winning children’s book author and motivational speaker. She is well known for her book, Buzzy the Bumblebee. She works to inspire others to “bee-lieve” in themselves and their dreams. Additionally she is one of the visiting authors for this year’s Claire’s Day, Northwest Ohio’s Largest Children’s Book Festival, free for everyone, on May 21, 2016.

20160505_175330_resizedDuring Family Literacy Night, students were invited to bring their parents to meet Brennan-Nelson as well as to enjoy dinner, a book exchange, crafts, and raffle baskets. Each student was given a ticket to put into a raffle for the fun baskets. Additionally, each family was given a bag of goodies when they signed in. The baskets were donated by graded levels, special organizations from the district and from community members. Baskets included Mud Hens tickets, Cedar Point tickets, and Toledo Zoo tickets. Mrs. Hughes explained that students enjoyed the ice cream and popcorn, as well as the various raffle baskets. Students really enjoyed the idea of being able to take home as many books as they wanted, as they were free and donated by other students!

Rangers Receive Claire’s Day Award

Claire’s Day Inc. was created in honor of 10-year-old Claire Rubini who passed away in 2000 of a rare heart condition. Her parents, began a partnership with “Read for Literacy” to inspire children and families to be lifelong readers. Each year Claire’s Award for Reading Excellence (C.A.R.E.) are awarded in efforts to recognize students who demonstrate marked improvement in their reading skills over the course of the school year. One most-improved reader from each kindergarten through eighth grade class can be nominated by his or her teacher. Students will be honored in a ceremony at the Claire’s Day Book Festival in front of friends and family on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Maumee Branch Library. Students can look forward to receiving a certificate of achievement and a voucher for one free book of their choice by one of the Claire’s Day visiting authors or illustrators. Students will have the opportunity to meet the author or illustrator and have the book signed as well.

Congratulations to our Rangers who will be receiving C.A.R.E. Awards this year!
